III. PROPOLIS:

PROPOLIS   is a rich mixture of bioactive substances of a resinous nature, which are collected by bees from various trees and plants. They are further processed by bees in the hive, and used for the protection of the hive against various bacteria, viruses, moulds and yeast's. It is known to contain around 50 to 60 % resins and balsams, 10 to 12 % essential oils and other substances. Of the one third of chemically defined substances, the group of falconoid, which are the subject of scientific pharmacological research into their effects on the human organism, can be picked out as being of particular importance. Propels was recognized as a natural healing substance by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and other nations, as a disinfectant and for other medicinal purposes. Propolis has long been known as a substance with disinfectant properties, destroying or retarding the growth of a number of bacteria, viruses and fungi (yeast's and moulds), and for its action as a local pain suppressant. Its immuno-modulatory effect has also been proven. It is mainly use to prevent pharyngitus and inflammatory illnesses of the mouth, to protect the organism against infectious diseases, and to treat inflammation of the gums, diseases of the upper respiratory passages, and inflammation of the gastric and intestinal mucous membranes and the urinary tracts. The latest research also shows propolis to have strong antioxidant properties in the fight against unfavorable environmental effects and free radicals in general. It is also interesting to note that bacteria do not build up any resistance to propolis, as they do to antibiotics, even though it has been used since the times of the pharaohs. Extremely good results have been achieved with propolis in ointments and tinctures in preventing bedsores, in accelerating epithelialisation of the skin following burns, against facial acne, chronic dermal eczema, excoriation of the skin, and cracks on the feet and hands. Its anti-mycotic effects also help in halting the growth and destroying certain moulds. Some people sensitive to bee products may develop an allergic reaction. The results of various studies show this sensitivity to be somewhere from 0.1 % to 0.5 %, for which reason a certain amount of caution is required. Propolis is biologically harmless, and at normal doses is practically non-toxic, and can, therefore, be used over the long-term with no side effects.
